Making the Most Out of Marriage Counseling

Marriages made out of two imperfect people are bound to face its challenges. After the honeymoon stage, real life begins. Sometimes, real life is not what was expected when the rings were placed on fingers and "I Do's were exchanged. The vows make it perfectly clear of what will happen: "for better, or worse; for richer, or poorer; in sickness and in health.

Many couples suffer in silence. Others take the proactive step in seeking marriage counseling. Deciding to participate in marriage counseling has its risks. It also has its benefits if a couple makes the most out of each session. Here are two ways a couple can do that:

Agree to participate together for a given length of time: In some instances, only one spouse is willing to commit to counseling while the other is being sent "kicking and screaming. Even though there may not be an agreement on the issue at hand, there should be an agreement to participate together for a given length of time. That amount of time can be decided between the couple and the counselor, depending on the severity of the issue.

Become open to complete honesty: Within the safety of the counselor's office, each person should have the ability to be open and honest about their perception of the issues. Although there may be disagreement about the issue, the goal of counseling is not to see every issue eye to eye. The key to progress is seeking to understand what the other is thinking and feeling even if you disagree. A marriage counselor can walk you through the process of open communication and understanding.

Marriage counseling will bring forth many issues and feelings. Yet it will enable a couple to grow and work through their challenges and bring them out stronger in the end.
